National Study Highlights Need for Better Standards of Care in PMR

Our team has published a national survey of Australian rheumatologists examining how polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is diagnosed and managed across the country.

Led by rheumatologist Dr Jessica Leung, the article titled "Experience of Australian rheumatologists managing polymyalgia rheumatica: results from a national survey" was published in the Internal Medicine Journal.

Dr Leung's study found considerable variation in clinical practice, including differences in diagnostic approaches, access to advanced imaging, use of physical therapy, and long-term treatment strategies. These findings highlight the need for clearer, evidence-based care standards for PMR.

For patients, this research is important because it identifies opportunities to improve consistency of care and ensure that everyone receives the best possible management regardless of where they live. The work provides an important foundation for future national clinical care standards and guidelines.
